           PROVERBS  CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

       NKJV vs.1-8...When you sit down to eat with a ruler, Consider carefully what is before you; And put a knife to your throat If you are a man given to appetite. Do not desire his delicacies, For they are deceptive food. (You have to be a big dog to run with the big dogs)  Do not overwork to be rich; Because of your own understanding, cease! Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven. Do not eat the bread of a miser, Nor desire his delicacies; For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, But his heart is not with you.(Hidden motives) The morsel you have eaten, you will vomit up, And waste your pleasant words.

       MSG...When you go out to dinner with an influential person, mind your manners; Don't gobble your food, don't talk with your mouth full. And don't stuff yourself, bridle your appetite. Don't wear yourself out trying to get rich, restrain yourself! Riches disappear in the blink of an eye, wealth sprouts wings and flies off into the wild blue yonder. Don't accept a meal from a tightwad, don't expect anything special. He'll be as stingy with you as he is with himself, He'll say, "Eat! Drink!" but won't mean a word of it. His miserly serving will turn your stomach when you realize the meal's a sham.

       NKJV vs.9...Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words. (We still have a few days before Thanksgiving in America, and those who live here will be spending it with family, or some of us, at least. It appears that when families get together, there will be quarrels and arguments. When these break out, just walk away. Don't get into it with anyone. This is not worth stealing your joy and peace over. Walk on. And for those who think the devil doesn't' like turkey, well just see if he doesn't show up for the party!)

       MSG...Don't bother talking sense to fools, they'll only poke fun at your words.

       NKJV Vs.10-16...Do not remove the ancient landmark, (we have heard this more than once, must really be important!) Nor enter the fields of the fatherless; For their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you. Apply your heart to instruction, And your ears to words of knowledge. Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod, And deliver his soul from hell. My son, if your heart is wise, My heart will rejoice....indeed, I myself; Yes, my inmost being will rejoice When your lips speak right things.

       MSG...Don't stealthily move back the boundary lines or cheat orphans out of their property, For they have a powerful Advocate who will go to bat for them. Give yourselves to disciplined instruction, open your ears to tested knowledge. Don't be afraid to correct your young ones, a spanking won't kill them. A good spanking, in fact, might save them from something worse than death. Dear child, if you become wise, I'll be one happy parent. My heart will dance and sing to the tuneful truth you'll speak.

       NKJV VS.17-21...Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the LORD all the day; For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off. Her, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way. Do not mix with winebibbers, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags. (ARE WE TALKING TURKEY HERE?)  lol!

       MSG...Don't for a minute envy careless rebels, soak yourself in the Fear of God...That's where your future lies, Then you won't be left with an armload of nothing. Oh listen dear child...become wise, point your life in the right direction, Don't drink too much wine and get drunk, don't eat too much food and get fat. Drunks and gluttons will end up on skid row, in a stupor and dressed in rags.

       NKJV Vs.22-25...Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old. Buy the truth, and do not sell it, Also wisdom and instruction and understanding. The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who begets a wise child will delight in him. Let your father and your mother be glad, And let her who bore you rejoice.

        MSG...Listen with respect to the father who raised you, and when your mother grows old, don't neglect her (Yeah!!!). Buy truth...don't sell it for love or money, buy wisdom, buy education, buy insight. Parents rejoice when their children turn out well, wise children become proud parents, so make your father happy; Make your mother proud!

       NKJV Vs.26-28...My son, give me your heart, And let your eyes observe my ways. (Here again, could be talking about idol worship or loving other gods, for he is wanting his son to give him his heart. He is God here and we are to observe His ways) For a harlot is a deep pit, And a seductress is a narrow well. She also lies in wait as for a victim, And increases the unfaithful among men.

        MSG...Dear child, I want your full attention, please do what I show you. A whore is a bottomless pit, a loose woman can get you in deep trouble fast. She'll take you for all you've got, she's worse than a pack of thieves.

        NKJV VS.29-35...Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine. Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly; At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things. And your heart will utter perverse things, Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying:"They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?"

        MSG...Who are the people who are always crying the blues? Who do you know who reeks of self-pity? Who keeps getting beat up for no reason at all? Whose eyes are bleary and bloodshot? It's those who spend the night with a bottle, for whom drinking is serious business. Don't judge wine by its label, or its bouquet, or its full-bodied flavor. Judge it rather by the hangover it leaves you with...the splitting headache, the queasy stomach. Do you really prefer seeing double, with your speech all slurred, reeling and seasick, drunk as a sailor? "They hit me," you'll say, " but it didn't hurt, they beat on me, but I didn't feel a thing. When I'm sober enough to manage it, bring me another drink!" There is an old Japanese Proverb that says; Man takes a drink, drink takes a drink, drink takes the man.

         Bottom line; The first of these appear to be talking about eating but they are really talking about constraint or refraining yourself of wanting to be rich and hang out with those who you think have clout. And then we go into the wisdom of not being unequally yoked or hanging out with those who are sinning openly and drunkards. Before I get hung, I did not say this, it came straight out of God's word. and then we hear and learn some on wisdom and insight and learning from your parents. Making them proud. Remember, what goes around comes around, and we will reap what we sow, so let's reap a good harvest in our children and grandchildren. And last but not least ; back to the drunks again. Must be of some importance or it would not be in here so often.

    ~~~THE WORLD TODAY IS UPSIDE DOWN BECAUSE THERE IS SO VERY LITTLE LOVE IN THE HOME, AND IN FAMILY LIFE. WE HAVE NO TIME FOR EACH OTHER. EVERYBODY IS IN SUCH A TERRIBLE RUSH, AND SO ANXIOUS AND IN THE HOME BEGINS THE DISRUPTION OF THE PEACE OF THE WORLD....MOTHER TERESA~~~
