    PROVERBS   CHAPTER TWENTY

NKJV vs.1...Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

MSG...Wine makes you mean, beer makes you quarrelsome...a staggering drunk is not much fun. (The funny thing about a person who is drinking...they don't realize how stupid they act, and if you try to tell them, they get angry with you, so the best thing to do is SHUT UP when they are drinking)

NKJV vs.2-3...The wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion; Whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life. It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel.

MSG...Quick-tempered leaders are like mad dogs...cross them and they bite your head-off. It's a mark of good character to avert quarrels, but fools love to pick fights.

NKJV vs.4...The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing.

MSG...A farmer too lazy to plant in the spring has nothing to harvest in the fall. (It appears that this is saying that you must keep some of your harvest to be able to plant more seed to grow more harvest. When the farmer plants one kernel of corn, it will grow many more kernels of corn, but the farmer must keep some of the Harvested corn to be able to plant in the spring, and I believe money is the same as the corn. You give and it comes back to you...and I would name what I want to have a harvest for. If I was to give $50.00 to someone or a charity, I would ask to have it come back to me at least thirty fold. Then when I get a landfill of money from somewhere, I would take some of it and give it again to someone with a need. This is called harvest. And that is my belief).

NKJV vs 5-7...Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, But a man of understanding will draw it out. (The best person to help another, is someone who has "been there and done that" sort of thing, because they can truly understand what the person is going through. It is hard for me to listen to a Preacher or Teacher who has never done a thing wrong, or who was raised in the Church all their lives and never really been out on the streets to experience the hard life, that most of us have lived. This is also important because most of us who have lived a life close to another will not be so apt to judge or condemn). Most men will proclaim each his own goodness. (Don't break your arm patting your own back, because every good gift comes from the Father of Lights, and when we do things for the wrong reason, it is not about the good, but the ME MAN. When we brag us up, we cannot be faithful to God, for it is Him who does the good). But who can find a faithful man?..

MSG.5-7...Knowing what is right is like deep water in the heart, a wise person draws from the well within. Lots of people claim to be loyal and loving, but where on earth can you find one? (Anyone had any knives stuck in their backs lately?) God loyal people, living honest lives, make it much easier for their children.

NKJV vs.8-10...A king who sits on the throne of judgment Scatters all evil with his eyes. Who can say, "I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?" Diverse weights and diverse measures, They are both alike, an abomination to the LORD.

MSG... Leaders who know their business and care keep a sharp eye out for the shoddy and cheap, For who among us can be trusted to be always diligent and honest? Switching price tags and padding the expense account are two things God hates.

NKJV vs.11-12...Even a child is known by his deeds, Whether what he does is pure and right. The hearing ear and the seeing eye, The LORD has made them both.

MSG...Young people eventually reveal by their actions if their motives are on the up and up. Ears that hear and eyes that see...we get our basic equipment from God!

NKJV vs.13...Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty; Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread.(GET UP! It 's time to go to work and bring home the bacon)

MSG...Don't be too fond of sleep, you'll end up in the poorhouse. Wake up and get up, then there'll be food on the table. (I guess if you want to eat, you had better go to work.)

NKJV vs.14-18..."It is good for nothing," cries the buyer; But when he has gone his way, then he boasts. (Are we not all guilty of this?) There is gold and a multitude of rubies, But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. Take the garment of one who is surety for a stranger, And hold it as a pledge when it is for a seductress. (Anyone ever hear of a loan shark. They offer the poorest of the poor and down and out a loan, but then charge such a big interest rate that it takes a year to pay off a very small amount. They send you these nice letters offering you the money to buy the Christmas when you have been struggling to get by, and they make it look so darn appealing). Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, (when you have to lie to get money, you will not be able to enjoy it) But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel. Plans are established by counsel; By wise counsel wage war.

MSG...The shopper says, "That's junk...I'll take it off your hands", then goes off boasting of the bargain. Drinking from the beautiful chalice of knowledge is better than adorning oneself with gold and rare gems. Hold tight to collateral on any loan to a stranger, beware of accepting what a transient has pawned. Stolen bread tastes sweet, but soon your mouth is full of gravel. Form your purpose by asking for counsel, then carry it out using all the help you can get.

(It appears that all of these are speaking of taking advantage of people. Either you are taken advantage of or you are taking advantage of another. We live in a world of "dog eat dog", and many people would sell their grandmother up the river if they thought they could make a 'Buck' Sad, so Sad.)

NKJV vs. 19-20...He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips. (this is why we need discernment. The Holy Spirit will advise you when someone is going behind your back and talking to others about you, but then to your face they act like you are their best friend. We have all known someone like this, and too often we ourselves have done this.) Whoever curses his father or his mother, His lamp will be put out in deep darkness. (I really hope that you all get this. We are to love and honor our mom and dad. He says in EX. 20:12 that we must honor them to have long life. If they aren't or haven't been the best parents, don't concern yourself...He will take care of it. Let Him be your vindicator. Remember...we are to forgive and to love our brother and sister in Christ. Your parents are hopefully also your brother or sister.)

MSG...Gossips can't keep secrets, so never confide in blabbermouths. Anyone who curses father and mother extinguishes light and exists benighted.

NKJV vs.21-23...An inheritance gained hastily at the beginning will not be blessed at the end. Do not say, "I will recompense evil"; Wait for the LORD, and He will save you. Diverse weights are an abomination to the LORD, and dishonest scales are not good.

MSG...A bonanza at the beginning is no guarantee of blessing at the end. Don't ever say, "I'll get you for that!" Wait for God, He'll settle the score. God hates cheating in the marketplace, rigged scales are an outrage.

NKJV vs.24-26...A man's steps are of the LORD; How then can a man understand his own way? It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy, And afterward to reconsider his vows. A wise king sifts out the wicked, And brings the threshing wheel over them. When studying about the threshing floors in the Bible, you will find so many times where it was a place of separation of the flesh and the spirit or a place of chastening. Good study; so to speak. they would take the wheat or barley and take them to the threshing floor, and then beat or grind the chaff from the grain. This hurts, especially when you are on the threshing floor

MSG...The very steps we take come from God, otherwise how would we know where we're going? An impulsive (KEY WORD)...(THINK BEFORE YOU LEAP) vow is a trap, later you'll wish you could get out of it. After careful scrutiny, a wise leader makes a clean sweep of rebels and dolts.(Anyone who is not loyal to your cause, you need to find them out and move them out. God will give discernment and wisdom of who to keep and who to say good bye to).

NKJV vs.27-30...The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD (We are the light that God uses. How dark is your light? How bright is your light?), Searching all the inner depths of his heart. Mercy and truth preserve the king, And by lovingkindness he upholds his throne. The glory of young men is their strength (Brawn), And the splendor of old men is their gray head (Brains). Blows that hurt cleanse away evil, As do stripes the inner depths of the heart.

MSG...God is in charge of human life, watching and examining us inside and out. Love and truth form a good leader, sound leadership is founded on loving integrity. Youth may be admired for vigor, but gray hair gives prestige to old age. A good thrashing purges evil, punishment goes deep within us.

Bottom line; I am sure that you have noticed the redundancy or repetitiveness of many of the Scriptures, so my guess for this is that they are very important and worth repeating over several times, to get ones attention to their importance. Many of them are about justice, lying, loyalty to leaders, ripping people off of their inheritance or about loan sharks, and banks taking advantage of the down and out. We do need to heed the advice that Solomon gave to his children, for the Lord made sure they were put into this Book

Proverbs 3:13-18 tells us: Happy is the person who finds wisdom and gains understanding. Wisdom is better than fine gold, silver, and more precious than rubies. Nothing you could desire can compare to wisdom. Length of days, riches and honor are in the hands of wisdom. In all wisdom’s path there is peace. Wisdom is a tree of life and joy to those who process her.
